What is Compassionate Allowances?
The Compassionate Allowances program allows quick determination of disability level and, in many cases, may allow the disability claim to go forward only based on medical confirmation of the disability. The evaluation for Compassionate Allowances is the same for both Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income.
To date, there are 287 medical conditions listed under the Compassionate Allowances program.
Typically, Social Security disability claims have more than one level of evaluation before your claim is approved or denied. Firstly, your disability has to be diagnosed or confirmed. After that, your ability to work is determined based on your work history, whether you are able to perform those duties, and if you are able to transition to any other type of work despite your disability (fairly recently, certain obsolete jobs were removed from the List of Occupations used to determine what line of work you could theoretically perform).
However, the disabilities listed on the Compassionate Allowances are typically very severe. Because of their severity, it can be quickly assumed that someone with such a disability would be unable to work and therefore eligible for a Social Security disability claim.
